Most facilities managers think about fuel quality in the context of cold weather — winter gelling, freezing lines, cold-start problems. Those are real issues.
But summer has its own fuel problem — and it's one that catches a lot of Michigan facilities off guard.
Heat accelerates every form of diesel degradation:
𝗢𝘅𝗶𝗱𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝘂𝗽
Higher temperatures mean faster chemical breakdown. Fuel that might stay viable for 18 months in a cool tank can degrade to marginal quality in 6–9 months when summer temperatures push tank temps up. The result: gums, varnish, and dark sediment that clogs filters and coats injectors.
𝗠𝗶𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘄𝘁𝗵 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗼𝗱𝗲𝘀
Bacteria and fungi that grow slowly in cool conditions multiply rapidly in warm temperatures. A tank that was borderline in spring can be heavily contaminated by midsummer. Heat plus any water in the tank is the perfect growth environment.
𝗛𝘂𝗺𝗶𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗶𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀
Michigan summer humidity means more water vapor entering tanks through vents with every breath cycle. Water at the bottom of the tank directly enables microbial contamination and accelerates metal corrosion.
If your diesel fuel has been sitting in a tank since last fall — or longer — July is the highest-risk period of the year for significant quality degradation.
